I run it under Wayland (Ubuntu and gnome) and didn't set it. Runs perfectly for me.
@jannem hm, it might be that Ubuntu does that be default or that SDL defaults to x11 if it is unset. Either way, good to know :)

It's not set for me.
According to the SDL documentation "x11" is indeed the default. What distro and environment are you running? And it is perhaps set to something else by default there?
I tried the other drivers available for SDL 2.0. "Wayland" gives me a segfault, and the others are reported as not available.
Unfortunately, "aalib" is not supported by 2.0... 😋

But I just realized that I did in fact set the SDL variable myself in /etc/profile.d/98-wayland.sh according to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland#SDL2
Looks like the Appimage does not report that wayland is not available, therefore the x11 default from the environment variable does not work.
I guess that one is on me :P

Not only there. Many Java Apps have issues with Wayland. That’s a good trick.
