@jannem I am running GNOME on Debian. But I just realized that I did in fact set the SDL variable myself in /etc/profile.d/98-wayland.sh according to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland#SDL2
Looks like the Appimage does not report that wayland is not available, therefore the x11 default from the environment variable does not work.
I guess that one is on me :P
